Special 2003 Academic Entertainments

Sir Francis Galton's 1873 proposal for improving Africa

University of Vienna medical researchers replicate IQ and the Wealth of Nations results: [They "drew on a variety of sources to produce average IQs for 50 countries."]

A picture of my wife and myself in Edinburgh has been kindly taken by our London friend Graham and posted on the web by Australian colleague John. (John must have liked my Ozzie hat!)

In the USA, 700 lawyers were recruited by the Arizona-based Alliance Defense Fund to defend against PeeCee assaults on the Christian Christmas.

Sadly, the UK lagged as always behind, with North Wales police inventing a new multiculti religion to which applicants had to subscribe (Times, 24 xii 03), declaring "I have respect for people whose abilities, beliefs, culture, race, sexual identity or other characteristics are different from my own." {Not 'tolerate', not 'be fair to', but positively "respect"!} Poor England had come a long way since the days when Queen Elizabeth I said she had no intention of making 'windows into men's souls.'

The above-mentioned news from Vienna about national differences in IQ triggered anger in The Holy Republic of Eire (IQ estimated at 93 by Lynn & Vanhanen).

Ireland's poor rating for IQs 'doesn't add up'

IN Sunday Times (Irish edition), 21 December, 2003

IRELAND has one of the lowest average IQ levels in Europe, according to new research. Ireland ranked 33rd out of 50 countries in an international comparison of intelligence, well below Britain and the United States.

The research, compiled by the neutral Austrians, has found that Irish people have lower average IQ than the British, the Americans, and the French.

The table was compiled by researchers from the University of Vienna medical school, who drew on a variety of sources to produce average IQs for 50 countries.

Britain is ranked 11th with 100 points, which is the same score as Belgium and New Zealand, while Ireland, with 93 points, is one of the poorer performers in Europe.

The people of Hong Kong topped the table. The Far Eastern countries of South Korea, Japan and Singapore take the other top four places after Hong Kong, which has 107 points. The USA falls outside the top 20 with 98 points.

The use of IQ tests to make comparisons between different nationalities is highly contentious.

It is believed that the Far Eastern countries perform well because they have advanced skills in mathematics. Sylvia Herbert, chairman of British Mensa, the association for people with IQs in the top 2% of the population, said: "IQ tests are not perfect, but they will have been going for 100 years next year. They have been refined and adjusted over the years and they are predictors of success in work. Mensa members have higher than average incomes.

"It does not surprise me that the Far Eastern countries came top. They are known to be better at mathematics. I was in Singapore for our international meeting and that year Singapore children had gained the highest results of developed countries."

There may be some succour for countries such as Ireland and America: many academics believe that IQ tests fail to assess true intelligence.
David Schulman, chairman of Irish Mensa, said Ireland was in the top two ranking countries in terms of Mensa members. He said it was not a fair reflection on the country to question its levels of intelligence.
"I think the research needs to have more gravitas in it," he said. "Ireland is an intelligent country in terms of its education and intellect. Sticking labels on countries is not fair comment. Irish people are bright and are quick learners and that is why we do so well in many aspects of work, including the IT sector.

"I think an examination of intelligence that labels Ireland as a poor performer is incredibly biased and I would not be happy with that sort of statement."

Dr Mary Corcoran, from the department of sociology in NUI Maynooth, said: "In social respects IQ tests are of no standing and do not indicate anything of a person's capacity to be happy or successful.

"I think this research is of absolutely no relevance whatsoever and seems to me to be very limited in what it says about Ireland. I would be very dismissive of it."

In another startling twist his her life saga, Cambridge University's Australian feminist, Germaine Greer, announced she had converted to Australian aboriginism - and been 'adopted' by several elderly female pipe smokers in a culture-rich ceremony lasting no longer than the time it took GG to write the aborigines a cheque.

{Previously in 2003, GG had embarrassed her supporters by declaring her love for the beauty of teenage boys. Likewise a decade earlier she had provocatively announced the delights of the housewhifely day in the countryside - after regretted she had never had a baby (just the one abortion). Her attention-getting conversion to abo-dom would at least have impressed assorted lefties and anti-Westerns, even if still leaving her feminist readership gasping.}

{Then unwisdom of standard-issue feminism was demonstrated when a German female sailor was murdered on her warship amid a tangle of sexual jealousies.}

Half-chat Trevor Phillips, the ex-TV executive and Blairite who became the Campaign for Racial Equality's supremo earlier in 2003 admitted the CRE had been "throwing money down the drain" by trying to prosecute 'racism' everywhere and would in future concentrate on making 'integration' a fashionable word (Daily Telegraph, 27 xii). Did this mean that Muslim schoolgirls would have to drop their veils? Well, er_., no, said Phillips. So what would 'integration' involve? Perhaps knowing that the Bible and Shakespeare had been big influences on Britain, he opined_. {By this criterion most of the literate world would qualify for British citizenship!} But Phillips would anyhow set up a study group_. {Trevor 'Blubberguts' Phillips, who came to Britain from Guyana, was earning œ94,000 p.a. in his four-day-a-week job while at the same time running a film company.}

Following pressure from Labour peers, the Government announced it would scale down the scam by which foreigners travel to Britain, receive medical treatment on the National Health Service for all their ailments, bring their relatives in for more such help, then toddle off back to their own countries without ever settling the bill - a scheme of compassion-gone-mad which has cost the U.K. at least œ200,000,000 annually in the past decade. In future, foreigners would have to pay up front for their treatments - an announcement which promptly brought squeals from the great and good.

A former deputy leader of the Scottish National Party, Jim Fairlie, 63, began a fight in the Scottish courts to recover Å“250K from the National Health Service for having ruined his life. After his daughter Katrina's appendix had been removed in 1994, it turned out to be quite healthy and her pains continued; so the Perthshire hospital referred the 21-year-old to a psychiatrist to diagnose her pains, and he soon 'recovered' memories from her that she had been raped by her father, by seventeen other men including two politicians, and witnessed her father brutally murder a six-year-old girl.

Within a year, Katrina took all this nonsense back and the police lost interest (and the hospital admitted they had mislaid a lab report suggesting her pains were actually due to an inflated gall bladder) - but not before Jim Fairlea's marriage, friendships and career had suffered irreparable damage thanks to feminazie hysteria and misplaced belief in 'recovered memory therapy'.

Almost eight years after the publication of THE g FACTOR, advocating educational streaming by ability, the Daily Telegraph's regular columnist Alan Cochrane felt sufficiently emboldened to squeak out about the Conservatives' shameless 30-year subscription to Labour's educational agenda. Cochrane wrote (17 xii):

"There is only one solution to the crisis [of education in modern Britain] and that is to return to selection. . . . unfortunately [the Tories] are still too timid to grasp . . . the issue."

(TgF's conceptual breakthrough of using 'value added' measures of education today finds wide appeal, e.g. at HMG's website -- -- where the most improving boys' school of today Britain turns out to be my own grammar school (of 1953-61), Queen Elizabeth's Boys Grammar School, Barnet, Hertfordshire. Of course, QEBGS was always the greatest - though it took a dip for a while under comprehensivist headmasters 1970-80.)

Though Britain's tabloids (e.g. the "Sun" and "Daily Mail") swung predictably into their favoured routine of calling newly convicted murderer Ian Huntley, 28, 5' 7", a 'sick, perverted paedophile', Huntley in fact did little to fit the usual profile of either a paedophile (wants to fumble kids, often boys, approaching adolescence) or a paedosadist (wants violent sex with young children).

Instead of being a 'dirty old man' Huntley was very much the charming young man, easily attracting girlfriends of typically 13-18, sometimes running several together as a harem while he fuelled himself on amphetamine. The ten episodes of alleged rape or molestation disclosed after his trial were a very small part of Huntley's vigorous sex life in his twenties. Evidently sex with Huntley was on the rough and sometimes fear-inducing side - though he sometimes allowed himself to be bound naked if girls liked that. And how they did! - many coming back repeatedly. One young woman of 28, who had been a classmate of Huntley and his first girlfriend when they were both aged 12, was actually trying to find him again in 2002 via 'Friends Reunited' when her TV screen brought the news of his arrest; another returned to him for more sex and his "gorgeous eyes" after a five year gap (following a ten-month affair involving violent sex); at one stage his harem involved 14 girls who would all come to him near-daily in their school uniforms. The chief peculiarity reported by Huntley's girls was not 'perversion' but control freakery - he was very keen on having his washing done, his meals served at stipulated times, his beer served at the right temperature and his partner kinkily dress or bound, and he would sometimes push them downstairs (especially if they got pregnant). He formed relationships lasting a year with several girls, and his last relationship, with Maxine Carr (in her twenties), continued for three-and a half years with the help of her subservience and enjoyment of sex. Anyone who thinks 'paedophilia' is a helpful description of all this should see the BBC's picture of Huntley's girlfriend Chantel Groce, a fifteen-year-old dancer when Huntley knew her.

Certainly Huntley turned out after his trial for the murder of Holly Chapman and Jessica Wells to have been an odd character with an even odder life. The product of a shotgun marriage, his first twelve years were happy apart from the arrival of a brother just one year after Huntley was born (a brighter brother, Wayne who would finally take Huntley's wife for himself after she got fed up with Huntley's violence) and teachers reported a nice lad whose mother doted on him; but from 12, a change of school left him somewhat short of male friends and his handsome father's serial womanizing came to a head in depression, alcoholism, bullying and regular beatings of Huntley (when Huntley reported to his mother finding his father in bed with a baby-sitter on one occasion and an aunt on another); and his mother (a big-jawed woman) eventually took in as lesbian lover a female security guard of 18, the same age as Huntley. From age 12, reports on Huntley were of asthma, shyness, fantasizing, unpopularity, bullying and temper, but mixed with plenty of instances of charm, smoothness and good humour and a chief interest in adolescent girls whom he could impress.

So why the murder of Jessica and Holly? Apparently insecure and sex-mad ex-bulimic girlfriend Maxine, now 26 and 5' 2" and loving nothing better than wild sado-masochist sex in red lipstick and black stilettos, may have gone off the boil, at least for Huntley - no sex for some time, Huntley complained to another assistant teacher, an attractive blonde with whom he tried to have sex while Maxine was visiting her mother in Grimsby in August, 2002.

(As a matter of fact, Maxine - who was a big-breasted* girl of low self-esteem who was notoriously randy after a drink - was seen at that very time in Grimsby having sex over a car with one man and kissing another (a 17-year-old rugby player, 6' 5"),

so Huntley did indeed have something to be cross about; though he himself had been two-timing her with a colleague at Soham School. Maxine had twice overdosed after Huntley proposed breaking up.) On the evening of the murder, just minutes before Huntley met Jessica and Holly, Carr had phoned and said she would be going out drinking, contrary to his wishes and express instructions. In a jealous and sexually frustrated rage, perhaps, Huntley invited the pretty ten-year-olds Jessica and Holly into his home with more intention of killing them than of having sex with them - thereby also achieving some revenge on the Soham community which had failed to appoint Maxine as to a regular job at Soham School.

All this is typical of what was long called in textbooks 'the charming psychopath' - though with a neurotic/depressive/tortured /psychotic side (for Huntley thrice attempted suicide in adolescence and tried again while awaiting trial in prison in 2003). All the mysteries that remain here (e.g. what exactly Huntley and Carr had rowed about after two rather settled and successful years - with the help of some benefit fraud; how many girls he had had - even his devoted mother believed he had had 60 in one year), they will not be solved by believing that Huntley was a standard-issue 'serial paedophile.'

{A diagnosis of psychopathy was also recommended by forensic psychologist Dr Julian Boon of Leicester University, by consultant psychiatrist Cleo van Velsen (who specially noted that 'paedophiles' normally have a small range of ages in mind for their targets), by experts at Rampton Hospital for criminal lunatics, and by 'Doctor Theodore Dalrymple' in the Sunday Telegraph (21 xii: "Huntley was no paedophile") who specially added that "scores and possibly hundreds of young British men" were leading feckless lives similar to Huntley's [without the murders] and deserved the same fate. Huntley's "darkest secrets" are apparently known to Rampton psychologist Christopher Clark, who certified that Huntley was fit to plead; but Clark said he intended to 'take the secrets with him to his grave.' Completing the Oedipal saga with a final victory for the father, 48, Huntley's diminutive mother, 49 (divorced but re-united with Huntley's father), announced to paparazzi she wished her son could be executed.}

* At school, Maxine was nicknamed 'Bouncy' - though she got thinner as anorexia took over. Several of her discovered boyfriends report her a complete slut who would beg for sex, e.g. on every item of furniture in a room. She would bite partners during sex and specially liked to have her nipples and breasts bitten. During her three years with Huntley, she was repeatedly beaten out of Huntley's sexual jealousy, said neighbours.

According to Britain's "Daily Telegraph" (17 xii) "One prisoner in four is from an ethnic minority and the proportion is more than a half in some London jails. While the total prison population increased by 12 per cent between 1999 and 2002, the number of black prisoners increased by 50 per cent." Clearly the 1999 Macpherson Report (by Sir William Macpherson of Luny) has been quietly and race-realistically binned. As with the world-wide problem of fanatic-terrorist Muslims of IQ c. 87, apparently one needs to watch what the Blair Government does, not what it says about the 'delights of diversity.' PeeCee is now an official religion, just like the dear old Church of England - but nobody (and certainly not Rev. Blair and Home Secretary Blind Jo Blunkett) is expected actually to believe in it.

Times readers were reminded by 'Doctor Dalrymple' of the phosphate-rich islanders of Nauru (south-west Pacific) whose wealth made them so obese they mainly needed two aircraft seats, so diabetic (>50%) and otherwise unhealthy that most of them died by age 50, and even rendered many of them infertile.

{What the Doc did not mention is that the best estimate for IQ in the south-west Pacific islands is around 85 - so perhaps wealth can sometimes be bearable_.}

Cross-patch feminists in Switzerland martialled demonstrations (e.g. of 15,000 in the capital, Bern) as two women were booted off the country's seven-member Federal Council which would in 2004 begin deciding on the composition of the ruling Cabinet. For the first time, two Council members were from the anti-unrestricted-immigration and anti-Europa Swiss People's Party - though whether they would have much influence amidst Switzerland's complex system of checks and balances remained to be seen.

Feminist dreams of toyboy-househusbands seemed to be achieving a degree of realization. Between 1968 and 1998, British marriage ceremonies in which the woman was more than six years older than her man increased from 3% to 7% of the total; whereas marriages involving a >6-year-older man increased less dramatically from 33% to 44% (Times, 12 xii). The increases were due largely to the higher incidence of divorce putting more middle-aged people on the marriage market; but the earning power of the likes of Madonna, J. K. Rowling and Gwyneth Paltrow would doubtless have made a contribution.
Whether 'boy bagging' was a good idea was, however, a matter on which the jury was still out. I wrote to the Times as follows.

FROM: Mr C. R. Brand, M. A. (Oxon.), F.G.I
Edinburgh EH8 9PP

FOR: Debate about British women marrying younger men

There is certainly some historical encouragement for the preference of Chaucer's Wife of Bath for younger husbands -- a preference which she herself realized in her fourth and fifth marriages (evidently the Joan Collins of her day). Perhaps the most successful such British marriage was that of Prime Minister-to-be Benjamin Disraeli to the shrewd, rich and 14-years-older widow, Mary Wyndham Lewis -- lasting 33 years and leaving Disraeli devastated when Mary died. Sadly, however, it is easy to find counterexamples. Anne Hathaway's marriage to the 7-year-younger Shakespeare seems to have left her with little but William's "second-best bed"; and Queen Mary ('Bloody Mary') gloriously married the 11-year-younger King Philip II of Spain only for the marriage to last a childless three years before Philip returned to Spain leaving a broken Mary on her deathbed. To allow more systematic comparison of the merits of age-gap romances, I provide a list of couples at:
(where I will gladly relay new cases and comments from Times readers). For the present, I can report that it seems much easier to find happy and successful unions where the man is markedly older than the woman: the marriages of Charlie Chaplin, Sir William Walton, Harold Evans, Michael Douglas and Sir Paul McCartney provide examples, all involving a man more than twenty years older than his wife.

Sincerely, -- Chris Brand.

In fact, there were only two highly age-gapped British 'boy-bagger' romances I had found which looked at all impressive: actress Francesca Annis and authoress Fay Weldon had both had relationships for a decade with 18-year-younger male partners.

A fine Spectator article challenged the corruption of British socialist politicians who consign ordinary people’s children to state ‘schools’ yet themselves choose private education or private tuition for their own wee darling children – or try to live in hyper-Conservative Kent, which still has grammar schools.

Likewise, in the USA, David Horowitz bravely continued his one-man campaign against America’s diversity-worshipping universities -- which by 2003 had 90% of their staff left-of-centre (or even 97% in the case of some elite unis like Brown and Wesleyan).

And from America came encouraging news of students beginning to speak out against their ideology-crazed ‘teachers’ – the fight-back came from the University of Texas at Austin, the only university in the U.S.A. to have had me to lecture (and witness the wonderful spectacle of gorgeous gals going to work on horses [double entendre not intended]).

After fostering and being studied for three years, rhesus macaque offspring turned out to be similar in levels of aggression and sociability to their unseen biological mothers rather than to their foster mothers – Developmental Psychobiology 43, November 2003, Wiley DePublisher.

Amazed by the continuing devotion of the media and kindred lefties to their version of ‘the Flynn effect’, I wrote to Steve Sailer’s internet Human Biodiversity Group as follows.

It is ludicrous to say the London School has tried to ignore the Flynn/Lynn effect (Lynn, 1982, Nature – after I pointed out to Richard the IQ rise in his Japanese data from 1910 (IQ 105) to 1969 ((IQ 112); Flynn, 1984, Psychological Bulletin). Secular IQ score rises were known from 1949 and result from the bicycle (outbreeding), better nutrition and, above all, a willingness to guess and risk the occasional mistake -- the right approach to many IQ tests, for the tests were designed precisely to identify intelligence in children whose accuracy/obsessionality/academicism was not high. I reviewed Flynn's work in Nature as soon as it was published in the 1980's and, with Jim’s co-operation, began an amusing and ongoing argument with him in the Irish Journal of Psychology. Budding fans of Flynn can read Chapter 4 of my 1996/2000 book for an easy summary of the whole matter -- available FREE (thanks to Philippe Gouillou) at In the past decade, leftists have relied almost entirely on Flynn to argue via the media with the London School -- but they actually show no sign of having read what either Flynn or I have said.

Since the 1996 publication of THE g FACTOR, Charles Murray has shown the Black-White test-score gap has NOT been decreasing (contrary to every Flynn-ite expectation); Phil Rushton has shown that the Flynn-type rises were largely in NON-g-components of IQ tests; and I have noted that top sociologists Christopher Jencks and (Black) Meredith Phillips quite failed* to account for the B-W difference in their major 1998 tome (my review was in Heredity in March this year and I will post it to HBD if people want). Stalwart trooper of the liberal-left that he is, Jim Flynn has kept going with his thesis that 'problem solving ability' might one day improve in Blacks and he has had America’s Brookings Institute on his side.

But N.B. JIM DOES NOT CLAIM AN intelligence RISE! -- he lately told me face-to-face over lunch that he thinks his own great-grandfather would NOT have had intelligence different from himself (allowing for regression to the mean). Also, I have replied to him (and he to me) at;
and my reply was appparently enough to make Science desist from publishing more from him pro tem.

* From my review:

"....their 500 pages of scholasticism will not fool any serious reader. The truth is that these authors have nothing serious which they can demonstrate. Let Jencks and Phillips speak for themselves: "We recognize that few readers will find our sketchy agenda for reducing the black-white test score gap entirely persuasive.""

27 months after 9/11, the Times got around to advising Britain’s “moderate Muslim majority”, re terror outrages, that “speaking out is not enough.” No, indeedy! “What the community must do is to inculcate a commitment, in British citizens, to the rule of law, the avoidance of violence, the principle of tolerance and the moral values of this country.”

{Great! And what were “moderate Muslims” supposed to do when they noticed that their inculcations were not working? And what about the many resident Muslims who retain foreign citizenship?}

Research by pious and well-funded peecee types in Scottish schools found a healthy prevalence of racist joshing (Scotsman, 2 xii). The online survey, carried out by a charity, “Children in Scotland”, found the majority of pupils -- 58 per cent -- had witnessed verbal abuse about a person’s race, and 35 per cent had experienced verbal abuse themselves.

{Coloured immigrants made up scarcely 2% of Scotland’s population, so most of this ‘racism’ was directed against children born to English parents.}

Edinburgh University confirmed its descent into the madhouse with a conference at its prestige Playfair Library and Talbot Rice Art Gallery called ‘e-Fusions: Is reconciliation possible after the postmodern age?’ The conference, furnished with a fall-apart-in-your-hands junk programme of verbiage (featuring on its front an ominous-looking Israeli Army lorry), condemned such “old left” postconstructibabblers as Jurgen Habermas, David Harvey and Fredric Jameson who had apparently been insufficiently utopian about the E.LU.-envisaged world without “binding divisions, classifications, allocations and boundaries.”

{Meanwhile, contrary to such out-of-touch idealism, top Times columnist Simon Jenkins came round to the view of this Diary that, far from ‘divisions’ being deplorable, Iraq needed to be broken up into its three contending nations (Shi-ites, Sunnis and Kurds) and forget about the fiction of ‘Arab democracy’ (quite unattainable till property rights and the rule of law had been secured) (‘The only hope now is to divide Iraq into three’, Times, 3 xii).

The case for partition along ethnic lines was put with his usual style and authority by Steve Sailer – who especially mentioned the success story of secessioned Eritrea, ‘a new Prussia’, in the past decade.}

In 2003, delightful businesswoman and interpreter, Orianne Cevey, 30, had been giving affable but workaholic popstar, ex-Genesis drummer Phil Collins, 52 and worth £300 million, marital bliss for five years and the couple had a son (Phil’s fourth child) in 2001. But they got mugged for Orianne’s handbag while doing Christmas shopping with their tot on London’s Regent Street – the race of assailant was unstated as always by cravenly peecee Britoid newspersons.

{At the time, London was seeing an average of 164 muggings per day, 85% of them by Blacks.}

Pretty Samantha Murray, 14, of Nottinghamshire went into hiding with the uncle of a schoolfriend – an unemployed former convict described by his own family as a “roamer” with a considerable record of womanizing and a marriage behind him (Daily Express, 4 xii). Samantha, 5’ 3” and with blonde streaks in her hair, wrote two letters to her (“disgusted”) care worker mother, 33, and roadworker father saying she was having fun working in markets, would always love her parents, younger sister and two brothers, wanted to marry David Tyler, and would “be back when I am ready.” Samantha, said by her mother to be ‘outgoing and with a heart of gold, but easily led,’ had had a row with her grandmother but wrote she still loved her. Police intimated to Samantha’s mother that Tyler may once have committed a racial assault; but they said they did not think Samantha was in any immediate danger.

The Daily Telegraph (5 xii) ran an excellent editorial about British Prison Officer Colin Rose, 53, calling his sacking (for a jibe about OK Bin Liner in the presence of ‘Asians’) "preposterous." (As Rose threw his keys violently down a chute at the end of his working day, arousing comment that he might puncture the metal base, he explained there was a picture of Osama bin Laden at the bottom of the chute – reference to the whereabouts of Bin Liner was constant in the prison at that time, just two months after 9/11 (when 300 Brits lost their lives to Bin Liner.)

{What a pity the new Conservative leader, Michael Howard, did not come out and say simply 'Enough is enough. The Conservative Party will promise to sweep away all political correctness and restore free speech in the UK. And for good measure, we’ll insist that any allegations of unreasonable ‘insensitivity’, ‘offensiveness’, ‘hurt feelings’, ‘creating a hostile atmosphere’ or ‘psychological harm’ will need to be backed up by a 75% consensus among at least four experts in psychological medicine.'}

In a move that could furnish an answer to whether anybody at all in Britain – apart from myself and Richard Lynn – would get real with hysterical ‘anti-racists’, the front page of the LUniversity of Edinburgh’s Student newspaper carried criticism of Prince Philip’s record on race (19 xi, ‘Prince set to be ousted’). Urging that the Queen’s husband be sacked from his 51-year lifetime appointment as E.LU.’s Chancellor, student activist Jeremy Kemp said: “As a university, we are very proud of our multiracial and cosmopolitan make-up. Prince Philip just doesn’t fit in with this image. His questionable views of race and different cultures are well documented. I think a democratic election [via the LUniversity’s General Council] would give us a Chancellor who is more 21st century….” For good measure, Student threw in the Duke of Edinburgh’s “infamous gaffe” when he asked a Scottish driving instructor how he ‘kept the natives off the booze long enough to pass the test.’ Subsequently, the Edinburgh University Student Association (EUSA) went on to vote by roughly 700 to 100 at a packed meeting in George Square that it would seek the Prince’s dismissal (Times, 27 xi, p. 1; Scotsman 26 ix, 27 ix). The motion read: “HRH Prince Philip is not a suitable figurehead or representative of the University. The role of Chancellor might as well be filled by a piece of root ginger”. After the vote, EUSA president Will Garton said he would write to the Duke to ask him to relinquish his post. But LUniversity secretary Melvyn Cornish said: "This vote represents much less than 5% of the total student population of the university so I am rather doubtful that it reflects the general feeling on campus.”

Jeremy Kemp told reporters: ``This is a cosmopolitan and multi-racial university. Prince Philip does not reflect this with his questionable comments and gaffes on race. {Pop star and Babe bagger} Rod Stewart would be a better chancellor. At least he has Scottish roots and is in Scotland more often.'' What? The students think the LUniversity “multi-racial”? – There is scarcely a Black [i.e. Negroid] face to be seen most days in E.LU.’s busy George Square!

Anyway, would the Prince move to slap down his ‘anti-racist’ accusers? Sadly, he did nothing overtly when given the opportunity to do so in my own case of 1996/7/8. But equally he apparently ceased to visit the LUniversity – Kemp told the Scotsman that the Prince was last on campus in 1996. Perhaps Prince Philip became thoroughly sickened with the LUniversity’s political correctness – emanating then as in 2003 from its Psychology Department where Kemp, 22, was a student in 2003. When visiting Edinburgh with the Queen earlier this month (for a sickening ‘Royal Variety Performance’ in the worst possible taste with multiculti Aboriginal acts and Cockney accents), the Chancellor did not bother to pop in to the LUniversity even though, at Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre, he was only a minute’s walk away from the Office of E.LU. Principal and Vice-Chancellor Comrade Timothy O’Shea, and even though the next day he had time for lunch at the Castle.

Black ‘British’ rappa-gangsta ‘poet’ Benjamin Zephaniah tried to embarrass his Queen and country by publicly refusing the offer of being honoured with the award of ‘Order of the British Empire.’ The Empire had been a slave empire, the loon asserted. But he was quickly put back in his box when a letter in the Daily Telegraph pointed out that Britain had been the first country ever to abolish both slavery and slave trading – to the consternation of African tyrants who still pleaded with Britain in the twentieth century for a re-introduction of the handy commerce (Sue Doughty, 28 xi).

The loony Black tyrant of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, provided an endorsement for racism when he told reporters that “Whites are a dangerous lot” (Times, 29 xi). For good measure, Mugabe specially pointed out that many Australians were descended from convicts and this showed especially clearly in the genes of Australian Prime Minister John Howard (who had led the way in urging sanctions against Mugabe’s regime). “Over time, the force of genetics has played its part,” said the mass-murdering Mugabe.

Psycholinguist Steven Pinker’s The Blank Slate (available as a Penguin paperback) was selected by top Times columnist Matthew Parris as one of his two books of the year (2003) (Sunday Telegraph (Review), 30 xi). Parris (who was once a Conservative M.P. and is openly gay) wrote:

The Blank Slate: the Modern Denial of Human Nature is popular science at its best, beautifully written, challenging but accessible. Pinker’s case – which I think he proves – is that our understanding of genetics is running about a quarter of a century ahead of the assumptions still being made in the social sciences and in politics. In our faculties and potentialities, he argues, human beings are not all equal at birth: our individual genetic inheritances will incline us towards talents and failings, strengths and weaknesses, joys and sorrows, which upbringing and education can assist or combat but must acknowledge. This is the reare kind of book which may make readers reconsider real-life choices.

Hooray! – though of course Pinker avoided discussing race differences so as not to frighten the horses. {My own review of The Blank Slate was supposed to be in the pipeline for the January 2004 issue of the journal Heredity.}

Mystical psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung got an understandable kicking from Anthony Daniels (aka Doc. Theodore Dalrymple) in The New Criterion Vol. 22, No. 3, November 2003. Though having trained with the psychotics of Switzerland, Jung became virtually incomprehensible himself in the manner of stereotypical German professors – entertaining theories of psychotics’ ‘collective unconscious’ based on nothing more than individual case studies, and writing his work up with zero respect for empiricism. Still, he was a charming man who survived the Nazi period in a cloud of obfuscation, married Switzerland’s richest woman, and then added a mistress – attributing his ménage à trois to “fate” to general media satisfaction; and he and his American followers managed – a little accidentally, admittedly – to solve the question of what were the four main human personality dimensions beyond the major two factors of g and n (see The g Factor, Chapter 1) (not that the Jungians themselves admitted either g or n). Credit where credit is due! Even the g factor itself was first securely identified by a Frenchman – Alfred Binet – who did not believe in it….

A brave TV programme, ‘Sex before 16: Why the Law is Failing’ concluded that a third of British girls had sex before 16, and 12% before age 12. Presenter Miranda Sawyer concluded it would be right to lower the age of consent to 12 (as in Chile) so girls can seek help and advice without the fear that their boyfriend would be locked up, and she received the support of Edinburgh sociologist Angus Bancroft who bravely said “…we’re almost over-protecting [children] because of our fears of paedophilia”; but Sunday Telegraph reviewer John Preston concluded merely that “any MP wishing to commit career suicide by the swiftest and most effective means ever devised would do well to take up her cause” (23 xi).

The top liberal-left newspaper of America’s most left-wing major city published an op-ed article (by a naturalized Chinaman belonging to a ‘Diversity Alliance’) concluding that immigration into California needed to be drastically cut back.

U.S. EXPERT Dr Daniel Pipes, a leading authority on the Middle East and Islam, declared what was long ago known to readers of this Diary (e.g. October, 2001), that Saudi Arabia was the real source of Islamic militancy. In a column titled ‘Make the Saudis pay for terror,’ Pipes (who holds an advisory post at the federally subsidized U. S. Institute for Peace) wrote of "the massive implication" of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the horror of 9/11 and cited U.S. intelligence showing that "Saudi princes are spending millions of dollars to help large numbers of al Qaeda and Taliban members escape the American dragnet." Pipes, who once taught at Harvard, also pointed out that several ‘liberal’ and ‘moderate’ Islamic leaders in the U.S. proved untrustworthy over the past year and had to be arrested.

Discussion of racial and national differences in IQ continued at three venues in China (as above); and Phil Rushton was able to get the following into the Vancouver Sun (18 xi).

The Smarter the People, the Richer the Nation

A nation's prosperity is predicted by the average IQ of its population, according to research that has mapped global intelligence levels.

The recent book IQ and the Wealth of Nations by Richard Lynn, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Ulster, and Tatu Vanhanen, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Tampere in Finland, report the results of testing the non-verbal reasoning abilities in various countries. They found a remarkable range of differences in average levels of intelligence. They also discovered these different IQ levels predicted a country's rate of economic growth.

The authors examined data from more than 60 nations and found that national
IQs correlate powerfully with per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and
with Gross National Product (GNP). Second in importance for economic growth was whether the countries had market or socialist economies. Only third was the widely credited factor of natural resources, like oil or gas.

One arresting fact emerged: The average national IQ of the world is only 90.
Fewer than one in five countries have IQs equal or near the Canadian average
of 100. Almost half have IQs of 90 or less. This poses a serious problem if the book's conclusion that an IQ of 90 forms the threshold for a technological economy is correct.

The academics found that the countries of the Pacific Rim had the highest intelligence scores: Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Singapore averaged IQs of about 105. The next brightest were the populations of Europe, the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand, averaging 100. In South Asia, North Africa and most Latin American countries, the score was an average of about 85, and in sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean closer to 70. This shows how wildly wrong is the widespread, though rarely stated assumption of economists and political scientists, that all peoples and nations have the same average IQ.

Nations whose people have high IQ levels also have high educational attainment and large numbers of individuals who make significant contributions to national life. They are more likely to develop efficient public services such as transport and telecommunications, which provide an efficient infrastructure, and are more likely to have intelligent political leaders who manage their economies effectively. On the flipside, nations with low levels of intelligence have low levels of educational attainment and few individuals who make significant contributions.

Some countries do have higher or lower per capita incomes than their national IQ averages would predict. This is where having a market or socialist economy or sitting atop a sea of crude oil or a field of diamonds comes in. Some of the countries with a higher per capita income than would be predicted from their average IQs are Australia, Austria, Bermuda, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, and the U.S. Except for Qatar, South Africa, and Bermuda, all of these are technologically highly developed market economies. Qatar's exceptionally high per capita income comes from oil exports. Bermuda has a well developed tourist industry.

Some of the countries with lower per capita income than would be predicted from their average IQ are Bulgaria, China, Hungary, Iraq, South Korea, the Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Thailand and Uruguay. But why did the peoples of East Asia, with their high IQs, lag behind the European peoples until the second half of the 20th century? Well, China's science and technology were generally more advanced than Europe's for about 2,000 years, from about 500 BC to about 1500 AD. But in the 15th century, Chinese inventiveness came to an end and from that time on virtually all the important advances were made by Europeans, first in Europe and later in the U.S. The explanation might be that Europeans developed the market economy, while China stagnated through authoritarian bureaucracy and central planning.

Finally, Lynn and Vanhanen peer into the future. They predict future growth is most likely in countries with high national IQ scores, but currently have bad economic systems. The countries of the former communist bloc -- Russia, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, the People's Republic of China, and Vietnam -- are good bets. The report shows that now the Chinese have introduced a market economy, their growth rate is rapid, about 10 per cent a year compared with about two per cent in Europe. China can be expected to reach parity with Europe and the U.S. in a couple of decades and become the new economic and military superpower.

J. Philippe Rushton is professor of psychology at the University of Western
Ontario and author of “Race, Evolution, and Behaviour: A Life-History Perspective”. This article is based on his review of the book “IQ and the Wealth of Nations”, which was published in the academic journal “Personality and Individual Differences”.

Following a massive suicide bombing by Muslim fanatics in Istanbul, junior Government minister Denis McShane urged Britain’s Muslim leaders to tell their flocks they should choose ‘the British way’ and reject terrorism. McShane was promptly denounced by Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and half-chat Campaign for Racial Equality director Trevor Phillips; but he found support from ex-Marxist Times columnist Mick Hume who complained of the “self-loathing” of Britain’s muticulti-loving organizers of PeeCee.

In a major test of the ideas of ‘cognitive behaviour therapy’, the English Prison Service discovered it was totally useless – producing no drop in reconviction despite £150 million being spent for convicts to have classes in ‘Reasoning and Rehabilitation’ and ‘Enhanced Thinking Skills’ (Times, 18 x, Richard Ford, Home Correspondent).

Prisoners took courses involving twenty 2-hour sessions to help them with ‘anger management’ and suchlike, but the ‘treatments’ showed no effect two years after release; and among low- to medium-risk offenders the reconviction rate one year after leaving jail was actually higher for those who had been on the courses than for those who had not.

Excuses quickly followed. A probation officer enthusiast accsused the government of ‘obsession with targets’ which had led to unselected and unsuitable convicts being sent on the courses; and he complained there had been no follow-up. An equally therapy-crazed psychologist explained that cognitive behaviour therapy – which had taken thirty years and mega-bucks to develop, e.g. in Canada – was fine for depressives and neurotics but that “prisoners suffered for a variety of reasons including drugs and lack of job skills rather than deep-rooted psychological problems.”

The idea that Britain’s jailbirds, who typically have multiple serious convictions behind them, do not have “deep-rooted psychological problems” would amaze many psychologists -- for prisoners have high psychoticism and low intelligence as well as high neuroticism. Anyhow, the Home Office at least was unimpressed by the excuses and said it was resolved to slash cognitive behaviour therapy wherever it could be found.

Urging that the Queen’s husband be sacked from his 51-year position as E.LU.’s Chancellor, student activist Jeremy Kemp said: “As a university, we are very proud of our multiracial and cosmopolitan make-up. Prince Philip just doesn’t fit in with this image. His questionable views of race and different cultures are well documented. I think a democratic election [via the LUniversity’s General Council] would give us a Chancellor who is more 21st century….” For good measure, Student threw in the Prince’s “infamous gaffe” when he asked a Scottish driving instructor how he ‘kept the natives off the booze long enough to pass the test.’

{What? The LUniversity “multiracial”? – There is scarcely a Black face to be seen in E.LU.’s busy George Square!} {Anyway, would the Prince move to slap down his ‘anti-racist’ accuser? Sadly, he did nothing overtly when given the opportunity to do so in my own case of 1996/7/8.}

A storm of criticism descended on Edinburgh University Press for publishing a book by esteemed leftist philosopher Ted Honderich, University College London. According to the LUniversity of Edinburgh’s Student newspaper (5 xi), the Jewish community was irate at Honderich being allowed to sanction Palestinian terror – especially no doubt after years in which it had aimed to keep the left sweet by supporting multiculturalism. But had Jewish critics misinterpreted the great British philosopher? No! Here’s what he wrote:

“My book After the Terror [said] that the Palestine suicide bomber does have a moral right to her act of terrorism, and that the Israeli in the helicopter has no moral right to his act of state-terrorism. To clarify any such assertion of a moral right, this one comes to this: the Palestinian suicide-bomber was morally permitted if not obliged to do what she did -- which very judgement has the support of a fundamental and accepted moral principle.”

(The ‘moral principle’ involved was apparently that of humanity in so far as Honderich’s long-winded prose can be interpreted.)

At the same time, nationally, leftist, pacifist and Muslim groups began to link up to try to humiliate President Bush during his visit to London; Muslim fanatics blew up two synagogues in Turkey, killing 26 and injuring a hundred; and the German right slapped down accusations of anti-Semitism by expelling from the Chistian Democrat Party an M.P. who had accused Jews of over-involvement in the Russian Revolution and the Communist Party’s attendant ‘class-ocide’* against peasants, Poles, Ukrainians, White Russians and the bourgeoisie. (Lenin himself was at least one-quarter Jewish by genes, from his maternal grandfather.)

{* "We are not waging war against individual persons. We are exterminating the bourgeoisie as a class. During the investigation, do not look for evidence that the accused acted in deed or word against soviet power. The first questions to put are:
To what class does he belong?
What is his origin?
What is his education or profession?
And it is these questions that ought to determine the fate of the accused. In this lies the significance and essence of the Red Terror."

Publicity in the Times for IQ and the Wealth of Nations yielded minimal reaction either in Britain or worldwide. Follow-up within the same week involved merely: one dismissive article in the Guardian saying of Richard Lynn, with ironic intent, “he’ll be weighing our brains next” {as well he might!}, invoking the tired Flynn/Lynn ‘rising IQ {scores}’ Effect (Gavin Evans, 14 xi) and ignoring Lynn & Vanhanen’s main finding entirely; one supportive letter in the Times (Register) deploring worldwide dysgenics, with poorer countries breeding too much (John Harvey, 14 xi); three evasive Times (Register) letters (e.g. pooh-poohing Mensa’s tests) (14 xi).

Evidently the left’s policy of repression of work on IQ had been extended even to substantial news items in the Times accompanied by a super graphic mapping worldwide levels of IQ and income. Only an utterly unqualified far-out journalist was prepared to raise the ‘arguments’ that academic lefties knew to be worthless. Clever lefties preferred to stay in denial. My 86-year-old mother had understood it all well in 1996, telling me as my book ran into trouble, “Christopher, whatever you do, don’t talk about the darkies!”

{In the next week, 16 xi, the Sunday Torygraph’s radio correspondent ran a bemused piece about “a strange little eruption on the Today programme” concerning Richard Lynn on IQ and national prosperity. The ‘right-wing’ newspaper [about to be sold because its proprietor was caught with his hand in the till] concluded feebly:

“There are different levels of objection to discussing such matters. Perhaps the findings should be ignored because they are not factually correct, all IQ tests being hopelessly culturally determined? Perhaps they should be rejected because, whether factual or not, such statistics give succour to racists? Perhaps, regardless of consequences, it’s simply a morally unacceptable way of looking at other people ever? In practice, all these objections mingle together mistily to make the matter effectively taboo.”

On 17 xi, the news of L&V reached China Daily (English-language Hong Kong edition). The story was favourable to the idea that IQ was linked to both prosperity and law-abidingness – as well it might have been, since Hong Kong has the highest IQ in the world (107 according to L&V); but it hilariously carried further the confusion generated at the Times between Prof. Richard Lynn and Prof. James Flynn, it did not mention genetic factors and it attributed better behaviour to “an “intelligent” culture”…. It soon attracted a healthy reply, ‘IQ is very important’ followed by lively discussion; and there was more at ‘Can IQ help?’ (click on Comment to see comments). (A neighbouring discussion page provided robustly non-anti-racist coverage of whether the recent incident of 400 Japanese sex tourists to Zhuhai, China, should be dealt with by executing Japanese, castrating Japanese or executing the Chinese girls as traitors – many of the 500 girls were under age 16, but they had given of their all on a most sensitive day, the 72nd anniversary of the Japanese army's invasion of Northeast China in 1931.) The China Daily story was also carried in China View, Peking, and the People’s Daily, Peking.

Re: He'll be measuring brains next

I write to correct the misinformation given to your readers by Gavin Evans (The Guardian, November 14, 2003) in his smear of Richard Lynn's worldwide IQ results with "1933 Germany" and "1948 South Africa." This is exactly backwards to reality. Far from encouraging IQ tests, the Nazis banned them because Jews typically score high on such tests and the apartheid state banned them because of the overlap they found between supposedly discrete groups.

The results reported by Lynn in his book IQ & the Wealth of Nations have been replicated in hundreds of studies in dozens of countries. Although the low African IQ scores are unpopular, one advantage of acknowledging them is the focus it brings to interventions such as better nutrition for pregnant women. Nutrition is one of the few non-genetic variables that have been shown to increase IQ.

In 1998 I visited South Africa myself to initiate a 5-year series of IQ studies in the university system. This only became possible after the transition to majority rule. We tested students of African, East Indian, White, and East Asian backgrounds, along with those of mixed ancestry, under optimal testing procedures, using culture reduced tests. The results exactly corroborated those demonized by your correspondent. We recently published them in the leading peer-reviewed journal dealing with IQ research, the journal Intelligence, published by Elsevier Science.

With respect to brain size, about a dozen state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) studies show a correlation of about 0.40 to 0.60 with IQ. And, yes, the evidence shows that East Asians (with their higher IQ scores) have larger cranial capacities than do Europeans, East Indians, and Africans.
Yours sincerely,

In a list of Blair-apppointed ‘People’s Peers’ who failed to vote much in the House of Lords, fifth from the top among the offenders was ex-LUniversity of Edinburgh Principal Dame Stewart Sutherland (Lord Sutherland of Houndswood). The Times (10 xi) was shocked that Sutherland had only voted in 17 of the 321 divisions which took place in the two years after his appointment – though this news would not have surprised LU.E. administrators, who had frequently needed to put up with Dame Stewart’s extended absences.

The idea that states can developed as non-integrated multicultural societies was spurned in a letter in the Times (10 xi). It was observed that Britain’s major attempt to do this in the past had been a complete flop – collapsing into its two main cultures as soon as Britain withdrew, and leaving a million dead in the process. The country? – Pre-partition India, which Britain had disastrously tried to turn into a single democracy, thus condemning the Muslims of Pakistan-to-be to Hindhu rule. The letter writer opposing ethnic federalism and doubting it would ever suit the U.K.’s Muslims? – One ‘Randhir Singh Bains.’

BBC Radio 5 interviewed Emeritus Professor Richard Lynn about his ‘off the wall’ idea that IQ differences might substantially account for national and racial differences in prosperity (10 xi). This Diary’s chief London Correspondent caught the broadcast and responded as follows.

Lynn was allowed on to Radio 5's ‘Drive’ programme today. Absolutely hilarious. He was interviewed by the egregious Jane Garvey who was simply unable to get her head around the idea that IQ might be a function of anything other than environment and became positively panic-stricken when Lynn refused to be cowed by the usual liberal bigot tactic of hinting that he is a racist to suggest that blacks as a group are innately at a disadvantage when compared to other races. Times they are a-changing.... RH.

The next day (11 xi), Richard was put head-to-head on the BBC’s flagship morning programme ‘Today’ (BBC Radio 4) against an African-sentimental lady who had been to Ethiopia to dispense largesse and never noticed anything wrong with the leading beggars she met; she also ‘knew’ that genes were forever being “reshuffled” by nutrition and that IQ tests were “only cultural.” Once more, Richard held his ground and managed to mention that sub-Saharan African IQs were “in the 70’s” and that childhood IQ was predictive of adult level of income (and indeed of upward social mobility from parental levels, he could have mentioned – Touhey, 1972, Br.J.soc.&clin.Psychol).

{Was the earth moving? Wait for the Beeb to bring out bigger guns than this!} {Richard also appeared in other radio programmes, BBC 4’s ‘The World Tonight’ and a broadcast for BBC World Service.}

Boards of Directors that bow to PeeCee and appoint women find their share prices dip (Times Business), 11 xi). Research from Cranfield School of Management showed that the number of women directors in Britain’s FTSE 100 (100 biggest companies) had risen 20 per cent over 2002/3 – to a total 100 women. However, of the top ten companies in the Cranfield Index — which rates FTSE 100 companies according to the number of women on the board — 60 per cent had underperformed the FTSE 100 this year. By contrast, companies low in the CI tended to have outperformed the market.

In a hilarious exchange of accusations, half-Black Demetrius Panton, a British male of 36, claimed years of repeated sexual abuse in a UK orphanage had left him largely unscathed (Daily Telegraph, 12 xi) – contrary to the central tenet of paedohysteria. Panton was denying the claims of Government Minister Margaret Hodge that he was “very seriously disturbed” – claims she had made in order to cast doubt on Panton’s accusations of state-funded paedophilia and to explain why she had rejected his application for more government funding for a postgraduate education.

{By this time, Hodge herself was actually Minister for Children and Paedophysteria; and Panton’s multiple abuser had gone on to a career of paedophilia in Thailand, culminating in his suicide. After a few days, Hodge apologized unreservedly; but Panton – who turned out to be working in the office of Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott – continued to consult with lawyers with an eye to libel action until Hodge promised a lavish donation to a charity of his choice and payment of all his legal fees. It was clear that, after a decade of paedohysteria, Britain had its first case attesting that paedophilia does not invariably result in serious harm.}

At long last, Richard Lynn and Tatu Vanhanen were allowed to make a mark with their March 2002 book IQ and The Wealth of Nations. The ending of the book's 20 months of virtual suppression probably came about because two favourable reviews were due out in the December edition of the journal Heredity -- part of the Nature stable, so giving Times Online Education Correspondent Glen Owen adequate cover if he ran into flak from colleagues. The longer, print version of the article hopelessly confused 'Prof. Lynn' with 'Prof. Flynn', so that should have helped ensure further coverage once the Times moved to untangle the mess. The full version wheeled in British media babbler Oliver James, a clinical psychologist, to say “The IQ test is heavily culturally conditioned”. But, by and large, Lynn/”Flynn” & and Vanhanen were
allowed a field day; and James decently told the Times that Lynn himself
was “kindly and unbigoted”. (A useful graphic for the article linked national IQ and prosperity around the globe -- though it forgot to give its legend for the light-blue-coloured c. IQ 80 countries of the Middle East.) I tried to join the debate in Times2 with the following contribution:

Glen Owen and the Times deserve serious congratulation for bringing out the news of Richard Lynn and Tatu Vanhanen's scholarly work -- effectively suppressed in the mainstream media for 20 months since its publication in March, 2002. IQ and the Wealth of Nations provides impressively reliable IQ estimates for many countries and shows a really strong link between IQ and prosperity (not the feeble correlation of .30 found in so many social-scientific studies). (The basic data used are made available on the internet by Matt Nuenke. More on the methods and resulting data is available from Lynn & Vanhanen themselves.)

Naturally some will wish to believe that prosperity is causal to IQ, so they should note that IQ predicts increases in prosperity from earlier baselines. For example, of the world's 21 countries which steadily tripled their Gross Domestic Product from 1983 through 1990 and 1993 to 1996, not one was on the African mainland (where IQ averaged roughly 75 around 1980). By contrast, of the 27 countries whose GDP decreased by 50% or more, no less than ten were African (Angola, Burkina Faso, Congo, Guinea-Bissau, Libya, Madagascar, Somalia, Sudan, Zambia and Sao Tome & Principe).

Twenty-one (mainly favourable) “customer reviews” of what may prove a 'book of the century' can be found on the internet at Amazon
. The four reviews at Barnes & Noble are highly favourable. Three supportive reviews appear at Social Sciences Web (which especially queries the failure of leftists to discuss or reply to the volume). Another very favourable review -- accepting the book as showing the causal impact of a nation’s IQ -- by economist-turned-sociobiologist Ed Miller (Univ. New Orleans) was published in Occidental Quarterly (Winter 2002/3); Canadian differential psychologist Philippe Rushton was equally accepting in his 2003 review for Personality & Individual Differences; and “human biodiversity” guru Steve Sailer loved it (in the internet anti-immigration magazine VDare and in the conservative organ Free Republic).

A summary in French including a reply by Lynn to criticisms is provided by educator Philippe Gouillou. A summary and the basic data are provided for Spanish speakers by Roberto Colom. Coverage in Swedish comes from economist-philosopher Gunnar Adler-Karlsson. Correspondents discussing the fraudulence/incompetence of Franz Boas declared L& V’s book “unchallenged:. Lynn and Vanhanen's work has quite possibly sounded the death knell for modern 'politically correct' denials of the importance of IQ, race and nation.

Sincerely, -- Chris Brand, Edinburgh.

The Statesman (India) (11 xi) covered the story without even mentioning genetic explanations for the IQ-prosperity link -- heralding how the Western left would try officially to ignore Glen Owen’s bunkerbusting job while carting off its walking wounded to strictly private sanatoria.

A leading organization of Black conservatives in America carried a splendid article which denounced 'affirmative action' as the modern equivalent of Jim Crow-style discrimination.

A U.K. Government-led 'Islam Awareness Week', boasting of Muslim inventions /discoveries (viz. guitar, algebra, paper and fruits such as lemons) was nicely put down in Spiked (4 xi) as an exercise likely to put even more distance between White British and Muslim children - not least because loopy Campaign for Racial Equality boss Trevor Phillips, a semi-Black, used the launch to claim that Isaac Newton's achievements should really be attributed to Muslims.

Reviewing for the Times Literary Supplement (7 xi) a new book, Kuhn versus Popper, Vincent Deary [the brother of Edinburgh differential psychology professor Ian Deary] was glad to celebrate author Steve Fuller's preference for Popperian objectivity and realism in philosophy over Kuhnian subjectivism and relativism. "The obscenity of relativism" also received a kicking in Times Higher (7 xi) from sociology professor Frank Webster [City University, London]: "The moral equivalence that accompanies cultural relativism cannot be accepted when it means that reason, religious tolerance and democracy are equated with an absolutism that executes unbelievers, conflates government and religious faith and denies the truth of science."

A leading Parisian department store offered its women customers striptease lessons. Professional strippers were on hand at Galeries Lafayette, showing how girls should reveal their all in the most alluring way. One stripper told a French newspaper that the lessons were artistic, not vulgar. But the store's publicity stunt prompted criticism with feminastie groups, who said their fatties, smellies, violent sados and hairy harridans would demonstrate outside the store.

In a refreshing up-beat piece, the City Journal (Autumn) ventured that the American right was surging through the left's former iron grip on the media. Apparently Fox News, South Park, Kausfiles, the Drudge Report and the internet have created a new phenomenon - and all helped to expose and punish the shoddy standards of reporting tolerated at the New York Times in the name of 'affirmative action.' No longer could right wing observations and points be simply forgotten thanks to the NYT's monopoly of news.

{Maybe some US right-wing outlets will even get round to mentioning THE g FACTOR? - still available free thanks to Philippe Gouillou at: _.}

THOUGH TEN YEARS TOO LATE. The Spectator (1 xi) carried a fine article about 'The multicultural thought police' by Leo McKinstry, saying that the U.S.A. was moving towards classifying 'racism' as a mental illness for which compulsory detention would be appropriate. McKinstry concluded: "In some ways, multiculturalism is a reaction to the barbarity of Hitler's Nazi regime. The sorry paradox is that in its myopia over race and its hysterical intolerance of dissent, this doctrine is dragging us along the road towards tyranny."

As California burned, police ventured that much of the trouble had been the work of arsonists - a group having a mean IQ around 80, and a quarter of them being below 70.

According to both the Spectator (1 xi) and the EU Observer (21 x), France's Jean Marie Le Pen was polling well, even as high as 33% in Paris, largely thanks to the liberalism of his well-preserved daughter, Marine - who has told anti-abortion Catholics to buzz off.

"There is no evidence that a tendency towards criminal behaviour can be inherited," declared Denmark's peecee Health Ministry. That was why it had not demanded that the world's biggest sperm bank, Cryos, based in Aarhus, Denmark, should require proof from sperm donors that they did not have criminal records.

But Cryos changed its arrangements right smartish when it was revealed that a man who had killed both of his two baby daughters had got on to its books and the organization was inundated with phone calls from worried sperm users seeking assurance that the murderer, Heine Nielsen, was not the father of their own particular sprog (Sunday Telegraph, 2 xi).

(Nielsen had been imprisoned for six years for the murder of his first daughter; and was next confined for life in a secure lunatic asylum for the murder of his second. Cryos had several times paid him œ23 for sperm donations but said it had never used his sperm because he had failed to complete the required psychological tests. As of 2003, Cryos had 200 sperm donors on its books and was distributing some 10,000 units of sperm annually to 35 infertility clinics across Europe. Never before did the Danes have their own empire without Saxon help?_.)

The U.K.'s Channel 4 TV allowed post-Marxist Kenan Malik five minutes to pooh-pooh multiculturalism as divisive, unnecessary and even likely to lead to apartheid. Malik's agenda was that we should all be good post-Marxists - just as the nice and passbly clever political philosopher Brian Barry [Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford, c. 1968] wants a return to strict colourblind egalitarianism (Culture and Equality: An Egalitarian Critique of Multiculturalism, 2002, Harvard University Press).

The Scientific Study of General Intelligence received a very favourable review from Occidental Quarterly editor Kevin Lamb. Apart from robust defences of the g factor and its substantial heritability, the volume - published without publicity in June -- apparently said that criminologists were coming round to the view that IQ was a key variable and that vocational experts deplored the gush being served up by multifactor theorists and by one Daniel Goleman in his ten-year craze of 'emotional intelligence' - for many of the variables offered as substitutes for g would never meet the exacting standards of American courts (established in relation to IQ) for reliability, validity, fairness etc. (The Autumn 2003 OQ also contained a reprint Enoch Powell's classic 1977 speech 'The road to national suicide' and the interesting information that the 'right-wing' Economist magazine seriously considered at the time whether Enoch, though a Privy Councillor and Member of the British Empire, should be prosecuted under the Race Relations Act.)

As the Romanian-Jewish, Peterhouse-educated QC, Michael Howard, became Conservative leader, it transpired that his ex-supermodel wife (formerly Sandra Paul, now 60+ but excellently preserved) had been mugged earlier this year by two Black youths – losing her treasured engagement and eternity rings and two handbags while pinned to the pavement. Presumably reinforcing the point, the couple’s daughter was also subsequently mugged in South London. While Howard had been Home Secretary, 1993-4, crime had fallen by 18%; and his reputation as a tough egg was only forgotten because his NuLabour successors were tougher still. But Howard was also a respecter of civil liberties and had thus declined to enact legislation making Holocaust denial a criminal offence in Britain.

Home Secretary David Blunkett turned on Britain’s mullahs and told them to learn English because if they did not thus encourage integration there would be a “real risk of increasing alienation” between Whites and Muslims. The Muslim Council declared itself dismayed at Mr Blunkett’s words, calling them “a post-September 11 form of Paki-bashing.”

A new film, ‘Thirteen’ was set to celebrate underage sex (though doubtless under some guise of warning against it). The screenplay was written by a thirteen-year-old, Nikki Reid, and involves waywards ‘Evie’, 13, leading her friend ‘Tracy’ into trouble with sex, drink and drugs. In one scene ‘Evie’ abandons her old-fashioned knickers and goes for thongs with cheery phrases like Hiya Big Boy! For better or worse, weenies will not be able to learn from all this, for British film censors have awarded only an ‘18’ certificate.

{Meantime, UK Home Secretary David Blunkett prepared legislation to jail for 5 years any weenie who had sex with anything at all, even another weenie. As a blind man, he probably had little appreciation that many girls of the 21st century were sexualized and sex-seeking from age ten.}

Nature devoted a two-page popular article to prophesying that within a decade significant numbers of drugs will be prescribed only after taking patient’s genes and heredity into account (Alison Abbott, 23 x, ‘With your genes? Take one of these three times a day’).

It transpired that the proposed new European Constitution would ban abortions and other procedures practised with eugenic intent (Times, 28 x). Since the abortion of Mongol babies was very likely to be deemed ‘eugenic’ by courts, it became likely that pro-abortion women’s groups would come out campaigning against the proposed Constitution – giving eugenics its first substantial public support since the 1930’s.

As two of America’s leading blind-as-bats educationalists chanced within a whisker of realism, e.g. in The Nation and The Boston Globe, I pointed out their problems (to The Nation) as follows:

It is refreshing to see scholars and your reviewer rejecting the tired ideas that black underachievement can be explained by poverty, non-integrated schools or large class sizes ('How the other half learns', 10 November issue). But at the same time it is depressing to see black kids accused of laziness and lack of 'culture' -- two other 'explanations' of their lack of academic success that should have been dropped years ago for research finds Black kids highly motivated in the earlier school years. After forty years (if not more) of huge state-funded efforts to improve black educational levels by simplistic environmental means, it is surely time to recognize that children differ genetically and that to expect all children to achieve academic success is quite misguided. It is time to tailor education to children's strengths, not to their weaknesses.

As part of the latest British outbreak of hysteria about ‘racism’ in the police, the Times moved to attest its anti-racist credentials by commissioning a column from left-wing ‘philosopher’ and Grauniad columnist, A. C. Grayling (25 x). The result was this:

“ ... although there is, alas, racism in the world, there is no such thing as race. This is not a paradox. Racism is an extreme form of xenophobia based chiefly on skin colour as the most easily recognisable marker of difference. But as a biological concept, “race” is an empty one..... The scientific evidence shows that such supposed “racial” characteristics” as skin colour and hair texture are merely superficial -- the genes governing them can be switched on and off in an entire population in less than 10,000 years, making a “black” people “white”, and vice versa, depending on how much sunlight they habitually encounter..... Not a few famous Britons were, in fact, “black” or of black ancestry, among the patron saint, St George; Dr Johnson’s beloved valet Francis Barber; George III’s wife Queen Charlotte; the essayist Leigh Hunt; composer Samuel Coleridge Taylor; and Florence Nightingale’s reoubtable Crimean colleague, Mary Seacole.”

A. C. GRAYLING (‘philosopher’), 2003, Times 25 x (Weekend Review).

Unfortunately ‘philosopher’ Grayling didn’t seem have established reality contact before putting pen to paper.

1. In 1994, ‘anti-racist’ top geneticist L. Luca Cavalli-Sforza and colleagues identified six main human population groups [*] and reported from their genetic data that “the greatest difference within the human species is between [sub-Saharan] Africans and non-Africans....” (The History and Geography of Human Genes).

[*] 1) Northern Mongoloids, (2) Caucasoids, (3) South Asians and Pacific Islanders, (4) Negroids, (5) North and South Amerinds plus Eskimos, (6) Aboriginal Australians and Papuan New Guineans.

2. Grayling had apparently not heard the views of a fellow British left-wing columnist who had taken the trouble to write a whole book about race.

In his 1964 paper “On the non-existence of human races”, Frank B. Livingstone promulgated the new truth that “there are no races, there are only clines” ..... There are limits to the power of inverted commas, however. “Races” may only exist as social constructs, but that still doesn't mean “white men can jump”

Marek KOHN, 1994, 'Racing uncertainties: Is there a biological basis to race?’ New Statesman & Society, 16 ix.

3. Grayling offered no sources for his ‘Black Britons.’ But the top Google-rated site for St George ( tells the usual story that St George came from a noble Christian family in Cappadocia, Eastern Turkey, and makes no mention of him having any Negro blood. Britain’s eighteenth-century Queen Charlotte (no ‘looker’ but harmoniously married to George III and bearing him 15 children) is normally said to have had a slightly African face, traceable chiefly back to a Portuguese ancestor having taken a Black wife five centuries earlier. The poet and essayist Leigh Hunt, the Southgate-born son of an American clergyman, was also scarcely Negroid in appearance, as can be seen at Composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912, also author of ‘Hiawatha’) was at most half-Black, being the son of a West African doctor and an English woman; and Mary Seacole was apparently no full-blown Black mama. So that leaves only Doctor Johnson’s Jamaican-born manservant, companion and surrogate son as Black -- though inheriting most of Johnson’s fortune, he had no head for figures and soon fell upon hard times.

As Britain’s ‘peace process’ with the IRA collapsed for the umpteenth time, top Times columnist Simon Jenkins drew attention to Northern Ireland’s twenty 20’-high fences in segregating Protestants and Catholics and allowing a bit of peace (22 x, ‘The Good Friday Agreement is brain-dead’). Jenkins further advocating handing over schools, roads, transport and local policing to “subsidiary councils” instead of trying to continue the power-sharing farce at Stormont.

While America tried to help Muslims in Bosnia, Kosovo, Turkey (which America wants to join the European Union), Afghanistan and Iraq – despite the threat that Islam posed to Europe -- loony Mahathir Mohamad, the Malaysian prime minister, decided to kick the American ally in the teeth by telling an applauding audience made up of kings, presidents and emirs that Jews were running and ruining the world. Jews, he claimed, "invented socialism, communism, human rights and democracy so that persecuting them would appear to be wrong, so that they can enjoy equal rights with others." These were not "extremist" views held by a radical minority of Muslims, Australian psychologist John Ray pointed out. These were mainstream Islamic views, as evidenced by the favorable response from the Egyptian foreign minister, who called the remarks, "a very, very wise assessment." Afghan President Hamid Karzai, an American ally whose country would still be governed by the Taliban were it not for American soldiers, some of whom are Jewish, called the speech "very correct."

The entire British press managed to report the street murder of a 10-month old baby in Carlisle without ever mentioning that the (promptly arrested) assailant was an Albanian asylum seeker who had fallen out with a British girl whom he had made pregnant. What an achievement for diversicrats! What an illumination for Brits when they discover the truth about peecee journalism!

Charles Murray (who co-authored The Bell Curve in 1994) produced a new book documenting the world’s top 4,000 geniuses – according to page space devoted to them in encyclopaedias. Murray avoided dwelling on the neuroticism, psychoticism and unhappy childhoods of many artistic geniuses (see CRB Quotations) and instead stressed the importance of wealth, freedom and a positive cultural atmosphere (as happily provided in the West of the past 500 years) – but such commonplace good sense did not prevent his book being panned as boring by the Wall Street Journal (23 x). At the top of Murray’s four biggest categories (Western Literature, Western Art, Western Philosophy, and Combined Sciences) were Shakespeare, Michelangelo, Aristotle and Newton. (By contrast, the Internet Hall of Fame for Psychology showed Plato ahead of Aristotle; and this pair of ancients being followed by Kant, Descartes, Freud, Vygotsky, Darwin, Shakespeare, Saint Augustine, James, Dickens, Marx, Ibsen, Goethe, Jung and Pavlov.)

Black-dominated Birmingham, which had laboured for thirty-five years to boost the educational results of its many Black kids admitted failure: in 2002, only 25 per cent of the city's African-Caribbean adolescent boys gained the benchmark five GCSEs graded A* to C, compared to a city average of 45 per cent. – However, the Birmingham Post gaily blamed the result on “the failure of government initiatives” and “institutional racism.” {Likewise, from the USA, Florida reported that its typical 12-year-old Black child lagged the average White child by four years in educational level – but the Tallahassee Democrat felt sure this was due to poverty, racism, low expectations or something and could be changed soon by a determined effort…. The amount of time, ink and paper wasted on untruth by PeeCee must one day be charged to the responsible miscreants.} {Further evidence of continuity came with a UK Government report that Blacks were six times as likely as Whites to be ‘sectioned’, i.e. certified as mad and compulsorily detained. Heroic measures, including more jobs in the bureaucracy for Labour-voting ‘experts’, were deemed necessary to deal with this perfectly traditional phenomenon.}

Faced with Muslim criminality in the British Midlands, often organized from India’s disputed cowboy country of Kashmir, Britain announced it would be stationing up to 28 policemen in Srinagar. The officers would not be armed but would be regularly accompanied by Indian soldiers. Already in 1993, the UK had spent £100,000 flying British police to and from India to pursue suspected criminals who had fled from Birmingham to Kashmir.

The Wall Street Journal (20 x) celebrated the pending release from prison of the unsafely convicted nursery school teacher, Gerald Amirault – 49 and imprisoned since 1986 on what many judged concocted testimony. Amirault’s mother and sister, also falsely accused, had been released earlier. The Wall Street Journal said the accusations of ‘child molestation’ had been “based on bogus testimony dragged from browbeaten child witnesses.” Through their 17-year ordeal, the Amirault family had been supported by the Woodhill Foundation, USA. The Amirault’s was by 2002 used in sociology textbooks to illustrate ‘hysteria-driven prosecutions’ – as Gerald Amirault was surprised to find one day in the course of his reading in prison for a liberal arts degree.

My 1995 review of Nick Mackintosh’s edited volume about Sir Cyril Burt was kindly posted on the Net by Australian psychologist John Ray at The review includes a suggestion as to how Burt obtained crucial data on separated monozygotic twins (who conveniently went to homes differing substantially in social class yet still turned out to have similar IQs).

After years of mildly pestering Britain’s police only for ‘stop and search’, ‘institutional racism’ and failing to convict White youths proven innocent in court of murdering Black media darling Stephen Lawrence, the BBC decided to turn up the heat. They planted a journalist, Mark Daly, 28, for six months as a trainee cop in Manchester and equipped him with the latest in pinhole cameras. Daly led his 120 fellow police trainees to believe he himself was racist. Soon he was hearing crude and not-so-crude ‘racist’ remarks in police canteens.

Once his own cover had been blow (after a tip-off) he went public and swiftly achieved eight suspensions and, soon afterwards, six resignations. Asked if he was comfortable with racism, one trainee, a former social worker, was filmed saying: "I'm cool with it, yeah. Because at the end of the day, for the last nine years, I was working for an organisation which was totally politically correct." Although 5% of trainees are typically screened out by police as insufficiently ‘diverse’ in their attitudes, one newly graduated Manchester officer ventured to the BBC’s plant that he voted for the British National Party and that Hitler ‘had the right idea but had gone about it all the wrong way.’ Police pointed out this officer had not completed his supervised initiation period – so had never undertaken duties alone.

Whereas Queen Elizabeth I had made the Church of England a success by saying she would not “make windows into men’s souls”, the BBC had decided no longer to tolerate private conversation. Whether Britain’s millions of race realists would at last feel obliged to stand up for themselves thus became at once the major national question -- followed by that of when far-leftist tall poppy haters would be similarly exposed and rooted out of the UK’s universities, schools, local government bureaucracies and media.

The Times relegated its report of the BBC’s snooping to a small item on its page 4 (though in fairness it did carry a report that only one of 63 Chinese illegal immigrants caught working in June had been deported, and that the employer had not been prosecuted). No British newspaper commented on the precedent set by the BBC’s invasion of privacy or even on its legality after years of supposedly privacy-protecting legislation. Comment at the BBC’s ‘Talking Point’ ran 20-1 in favour of the BBC’s underhand action. The last ten policemen murdered in Britain were murdered by Blacks. For more of the Manchester officers’ choice comments, see Sky News.

{The day after the story broke, the Daily Telegraph and Times still both declined to comment, and carried no relevant letters. By contrast, the Guardian and Independent had a field day. They demanded charges of “obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception and damaging police property” against Mark Daly be dropped; and they rebuked Home Secretary David Blunkett who (alone among Britain’s political class) had criticized the BBC for a “covert stunt” involving more ‘story creation’ than ‘story reporting.’}
